Just Because Salon Prom Queen Project Seeks Donations

Monday, April 30th, 2012

Carol Thomas, Salon Owner & 2012 FGA Black History Month Honoree

This year Just Because Salon is sponsoring 9 young ladies from Benjamin Banneker Academy; 8 will be attending college and 1 is enlisted in the US Marines. Preparation starts early for the prom, from the dress to the flowers to the final salon touches, the prom can prove to be overwhelmingly expensive for the young ladies and their families.

Just Because Salon Prom Queen Project is now seeking donations of formal dresses, accessories and financial support; your donations will automatically enter you into a raffle to win their exclusive “Detoxifying Hair Treatment” as featured in UPTOWN MAGAZINE.

Just Because Salon is located at 141 Carlton Avenue; if you’d like to help, please contact the salon at 718.722.7810.

FREE NYPD Summer Youth Police Academy 2012

Sunday, April 29th, 2012

Dear Neighbors,
This notice is from Police Commissioner
Raymond W. Kelly’s Liaison Unit

The NYPD Youth Services Section will be accepting applications for the NYPD Youth Police Academy 2012 now through June 22, 2012. For over 15
years, the Summer Youth Academy has provided our youth with a unique
opportunity to interact with law enforcement professionals. The
program is for city youths between the ages of 10 and 16 and is held
in seven Academies throughout the City. The program takes place five
days a week for six weeks during the summer, culminating in a
graduation ceremony at One Police Plaza featuring Police Commissioner
Raymond W. Kelly. Police Officers conduct life skills and law
enforcement classes consisting of lectures, role-plays and
demonstrations. Participants engage in military drills, similar to
what recruits at the Police Academy experience, and take field trips
to police facilities.

You can view a video about this program
featuring highlights from past Academies on our YouTube channel, by
