Green Fort Greene & Clinton Hill
Monday, October 1st, 2007
What and Why
We are making Fort Greene and Clinton Hill green neighborhoods with two goals in mind: reducing our contribution to global warming and our use of non-renewable resources.
We are doing this by promoting four actions. (Other steps will follow and other ideas are most welcome.)
• Buying electricity from sources that do not contribute to global warming
• Flooding the neighborhood with energy efficient light bulbs
• Promoting recycling and reducing refuse
• Getting many more street trees and other plantings in public spaces
The Fort Greene Association Is Looking for a Few Good…Homes!
Saturday, September 1st, 2007The 2008 Fort Greene House tour is just around the corner, and maybe your house should be included.
It’s never too early. The 28th Fort Greene House tour, which was held on May 7, 2006, was an overwhelming success. The homes were wonderful, interesting and varied. A great afternoon was had by all who participated. But why should you include your house in the 2008 house tour?
There are many reasons: your home may be historically accurate for its time; or it is architect–designed to meld the 19th & 21st centuries; or it reveals a contemporary environment in harmony with Fort Greene; or it has a distinctive garden. There are many reasons.
The Fort Greene Association House Tour provides us with the important opportunity to tell the world that we are proud of our ever-evolving community; its homes, its people, its underlying spirit. Be a part of it.
For more information about having your house on the tour, or if you know someone whose house should be, please contact [email protected]

Atlantic Yards, A Done Deal?
Sunday, August 19th, 2007From an e-mail sent to the Fort Greene Association:
…I am a Fort Greene resident and I thought that the decision for Atlantic Yards to build was over. Are you saying that a continued fight at this point can prevent Bruce Ratner from proceeding with the construction even though he has gotten approval from the Mayor and Governor Pataki? I understand the reduction in the construction, but that is telling me that the development will continue —- only not as much as originally planned. Am I being mislead?
Following are the latest updates on the two major lawsuits against the Atlantic Yards project. The second lawsuit, relating to the flawed Environmental Impact Study, was brought by a coalition of 25 community groups including the FGA. We are currently awaiting the judge’s decision, which is expected any day. A win in one or both of these lawsuits could force the project back to the drawing board or stop it entirely.
Historic District Extension
Sunday, August 12th, 2007Extension/Unification of the Fort Greene and Brooklyn Academy of Music Historic Districts
When the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission designated two of Brooklyn’s Historic Districts in 1978, it was a glory for neighborhood advocates, as well as an abject disappointment. What had been proposed as one great Fort Greene Historic District was now disjoined. Members of both districts, to this day, work in tandem as part of the Fort Greene Association and feel that such a cleavage is a travesty.
With this early 21st Century’s swift, welcome rejuvenation of Downtown Brooklyn, the FGA believes it is essential now to embed an historic footstone from our ancestors’ path toward their hopes for our city’s future. It is also vital to correct the earlier landmarking mistake because many buildings in the swath of property between the two districts have an architectural quality identical to those that were designated – yet they could presently be ball-battered into oblivion. Through extension and unification into one important Fort Greene Historic District, we hope you will join us to conserve this qualitative history as our forebears meant it to be.
Greetings from the FGA Chair, Ursula Hegewisch
Sunday, August 12th, 2007Hello, my name is Ursula Hegewisch and I want to introduce myself as the new, Chair of The Fort Greene Association. For me, I knew Fort Greene was “Home” the first time I visited. It was the mythical New York neighborhood I had dreamed of but didn’t believe existed. Over the years, as I’ve learned more of the history of our community, met more neighbors, welcomed new people and businesses into the community, my love for this neighborhood has deepened. I am constantly amazed, yet not surprised, by how many others who live here feel as I do about Fort Greene. I hope, in the near future, to meet many more neighbors as the FGA moves forward with many exciting, new and continuing initiatives and programs to strengthen and enhance our community. I look forward to serving the next year and want to extend deep thanks and appreciation to Phillip Kellogg, our most recent Chair, for his dedication and hard work on behalf of the FGA and our entire community.
