“Contextual Zoning” Passes NY City Council!

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

This afternoon, the New York City Council voted into law the rezoning of 99 blocks in the Fort Greene, Clinton Hill and Wallabout neighborhoods.
Known as “contextual” zoning, this new zoning law will protect the character of this truly special area for generations to come. Buildings will now need to conform to height restrictions so there are no more towers sticking out like sore thumbs (or tin cans) right next to a 4-story brownstone. Even development along the commercial corridors of Fulton Street and Myrtle Avenue will now be required to conform to height restrictions where there weren’t any before.
To view details of the new zoning law, visit the website of the New York Department of City Planning.
Years in the making and a top priority for the Fort Greene Association, this effort owes its success to so many people. Congratulations everyone, and thank you all.

Pedestrian DANGER Zones in Fort Greene

Monday, February 5th, 2007

The Fort Greene Association is very concerned about pedestrian safety in the neighborhood. There are many complicated intersections, but vehicular traffic is very dense and moves at fast speeds. The FGA feels it is imperative to have these issues addressed before someone gets hurt.

On this page, the FGA will document priority intersections and recommended ways in which DOT can rectify dangerous zones in the neighborhood. Although the DOT may be concerned with traffic flow and alleviating congestion, the FGA’s priority remains with pedestrian safety. Our citizens lives are at stake.

Until these issues are resolved, we recommend that citizens walk with EXTREME CAUTION at the intersections listed below.
