Recycle Tomorrow
In response to complaints from residents, Community Board 2 contacted the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) about the impact of back-to-back Monday holidays this month. We learned something we hadn’t heard before: When there are back-to-back holidays, like today, recyclables will be collected after the second holiday.
The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) suspends garbage and recycling pick up on certain holidays, including Lincoln’s Birthday and President’s Day this month. Generally, residents are instructed to set out garbage after 5pm (4pm from October 1 to March 31) on the holiday for collection beginning the next day, which may occur earlier or later than normal collection.
Residents are also instructed to hold their recyclables until the following week. This had in the past presented a bit of a hardship when there are back-to-back holidays on the same day of the week, as is the case in February and sometimes at Christmas and New Years. Some residents had been required to hold their recycling for up to three weeks.
That rule has changed. When there are back to back holidays, recyclables will be collected after the second holiday.
