Learning More about Our Mayoral Candidates

The Park Slope Civic Council and five other community groups are holding a public forum for candidates in the upcoming New York City mayoral race. The challenging array of candidates and issues in this year’s New York City mayoral election has been the impetus for this forum, which is also being sponsored by the Brooklyn Heights Association, the Boerum Hill Association, the Crown Heights North Association, the Fort Greene Association, the Prospect Heights Neighborhood Development Council, and the Carroll Gardens Neighborhood Association.

The Brooklyn Civics 2013 Mayoral Forum is an opportunity for residents to submit questions with a Brooklyn focus, on a range of topics that will include infrastructure, schools, emergency preparedness, city services, transportation and transit, parks, development, businesses, and local jobs. The event is set for:

Monday, May 6, 7-9 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.)
Congregation Beth Elohim, 274 Garfield Pl. at Eighth Avenue

All mayoral candidates as of March 2013 have been invited to attend the forum (Sal Albanese, Adolfo Carrion, John Catsimatidis, Bill de Blasio, Joe Lhota, John Liu, George McDonald, Christine Quinn, and Bill Thompson). The forum will be moderated by Andrea Bernstein of WNYC and will be strictly timed. There will be 1.5-minute opening statements and 2-minute closing statements. The Civic Council invites all interested voters to attend this forum and hear the candidates’ vision for the future of Brooklyn and New York City. Reporters from all local news outlets, publications, and blogs are also welcome to attend.

Please submit your questions through Google Moderator (separate log-in may be required) and vote on questions of importance to you by May 3. If you prefer, mail questions to the Mayoral Forum 2013 Committee through any of the co-sponsoring groups by April 26.

The forum is free to the public. RSVP or tickets are not required; seating is on a first-come-first-served basis. Bring friends and voters.

Monday, June 4, 2012, Fort Greene Association (FGA) Host Three-Party 8th Congressional District Town Hall Debate

Friday, June 1st, 2012

The Fort Greene Association (FGA) is hosting the 8th Congressional District Town Hall Debate:

Monday, June 4, 2012
Doors open 7PM
Debate to start at 7:30PM
Brooklyn Music School
126 Saint Felix Street (between Hanson Place and Lafayette Avenue)

Invitations have been extended to all candidates running for the 8th Congressional District seat: Councilman Charles Barron (D), Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries (D), Colin Beavan (Green), and Alan Bellone (R).

“With the confusion of redistricting and the many questions around this important congressional seat this is a great opportunity for local Brooklynites to get a firsthand look at their potential representation in Washington, DC” said Paul Palazzo FGA Chairperson.

Confirmed participants include Councilman Charles Barron (D), Colin Beavan (Green), and Alan Bellone (R).

The debate moderator is Fred Brown, Associate Producer of Public Affairs for BRIC Arts | Media | Bklyn’s Brooklyn Independent Television.

The candidates will each have three minutes to answer questions prepared by our moderator, as submitted by constituents in attendance as well as those following the debate via social media.

“This is a great opportunity for the candidates to meet and engage the neighborhood and their constituents face to face — and an opportunity for the neighborhood to ‘kick the tires and look under the hood’ of the political vehicle they are about to elect,” commented Paul Palazzo, FGA Chairperson.

The Fort Greene Association (FGA) is hosting this event as a public service only, and in doing so the FGA does not endorse any party or candidates. The FGA is scheduling a final debate inviting all active 8th Congressional District candidates running on Monday, October 8, 2012, 7PM, the location TBD.

Constituents wishing RSVP their attendance for the June 4th debate as well as submit questions in advance to be included in the debate may do so at [email protected].
