Fort Greene Association Neighborhood Slow Zone Application & Petition

Fort Greeners,

Since the Fort Greene Association’s (FGA) Livable Streets survey was completed last fall, it revealed that traffic calming was the number one priority of Fort Greeners. The Livable Streets Committee is proposing another opportunity to help make our streets safer: Neighborhood Slow Zones.

The Neighborhood Slow Zone program is a new initiative from the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) that gives communities the chance to apply for additional traffic calming measures in a specific residential area. Its goal is to lower the number and severity of car crashes by slowing traffic from 30 mph to 20 mph and reducing cut-through traffic. The DOT would do this through speed bumps, markings and other traffic calming treatments.

Creating Slow Zones in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill is a tremendous opportunity to improve safety and preserve the residential character of our streets, especially in the face of potential traffic impacts from the upcoming arena.

The FGA is applying for two Neighborhood Slow Zones with the proposed boundaries:

  • Fort Greene: Park Ave to the north, Lafayette Ave to the south, Ashland Pl/Navy St to the west, and Vanderbilt Ave to the east.
  • Clinton Hill: Park Ave to the north, Greene Ave to the south, Vanderbilt Ave to the west, and Classon Ave to the east.

Applications are due this Friday! Your show for support will improve our chances of acceptance.
