Celebrating Hispanic Heritage - Brooklyn Style
with the Brooklyn Music School

This past Saturday the Fort Greene Association (FGA) participated in the Brooklyn Music School’s 1st Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Street Festival. Festival attendees tasted traditional dishes from Caribbean and Latin American countries. Children had the opportunity to participate in free music and dance classes offered by the Brooklyn Music School, and the many festival performances blew the crowd away. The FGA had a great time meeting current and former Fort Greene residents who stopped by our table to design their very own musical maracas.

Meet a few of our talented maracas designers and see their beautiful designs

If you are interested in working on community outreach and engagement activities such as this, please contact Lillian Jean-Baptiste, Communications & Community Engagement Chair at [email protected]. Not a member of the FGA and want to join or are you a member of the FGA and would like to join one of our many committees? Please click here to learn how you can contribute to your community; we look forward to hearing from you.

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15th - October 15th, the Brooklyn Music School invites the Fort Greene community and neighbors to a cultural celebration of dance, music, food and crafts from Latin American and Caribbean nations.

Saturday, October 8, 2011

10 AM – 5 PM rain (in doors) or shine

126 Saint Felix Street, between Hanson Place and Lafayette Avenue

Admission is free and there will be fun activities for people of all ages!

The event features live performances, plus food, arts & crafts and vendors from diverse nations, as well as the opportunity to visit music and dance classes at the school.

“The Brooklyn Music School is delighted to welcome our Hispanic neighbors and friends to celebrate their cultural patrimony. We also are excited to share the richness and diversity of Hispanic music, dance and folklore with our students and families. This event marks the start of our centennial year. Brooklyn Music School proudly celebrates its 100-year anniversary and continues to give to the community of Fort Greene and all of Brooklyn by promoting awareness and participation in the cultural diversity of Brooklyn and its Hispanic communities,” said Frank Alvarado, Executive Director of the Brooklyn Music School.

Students ages 5 — 10 are encouraged to participate in open classes and enjoy a hands-on experience in guitar, basic piano, drums and violin, as well as tap dance and Hip Hop dance.

The Street Fair combines, on one stage, representatives of traditional folklore plus classical and contemporary music and dance from a dozen countries. Performers include:

  • Antonio Moreno (Brazil)
  • Conjunto Chileno Lonquimay (Chile)
  • Conjunto Folklórico Panameño (Panama)
  • Danza Fiesta (Puerto Rico)
  • Danza Pre-Hispánica (Mexico)
  • Elisa Brown (United States)
  • Grupo Ayazamana (Ecuador)
  • Grupo Cubano (Cuba)
  • Grupo Folklórico Dominicano (Dominican Republic)
  • Huellas Andinas (Peru)
  • Irka Mateo (Dominican Republic)
  • Sangre Boliviana (Bolivia)
  • Tletlpapalotzin (Mexico)
  • Transcendancegroup (Argentina/United States)
  • Virginia Luque (Spain)

The Brooklyn Music School will share materials from its archives, including memorabilia of famous conductors and performers who graced the Playhouse stage.

Children and adults can learn how to make maracas with the Fort Greene Association (FGA), our community partner. Meet FGA board members while designing your custom made musical maracas (while supplies lasts). Maracas are native percussion instruments of Latin American countries such as Brazil, Columbia, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela to name a few.

Mano a Mano, a group promoting the traditional arts and crafts of Mexico, will also participate in the street fair.

Featured vendors include Caribbean handmade jewelry, tacos, enchiladas and tamales of Mexico, empanadas and arepas of Colombia, and Dominican mofongo.
