Walt Whitman’s Fort Greene Park A stroll sponsored by Fort Greene Park Conservancy and The Walt Whitman Project

Walk around Fort Greene Park, a greensward that owes its existence in large part to Walt Whitman’s editorials written for the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, and learn about this poet’s intimate connection with Brooklyn’s first official park.

The afternoon includes readings of Whitman’s prose and poetry and discussions about the park, the Wallabout Martyrs and the monument dedicated to their memory, and Brooklyn Hospital. This event will conclude with a walk up Myrtle Avenue to 99 Ryerson Street, the last existing building in Brooklyn that was a residence of Walt Whitman.

Boston to Buenos Aires

The Brooklyn Conservatory of Music proudly presents the Brooklyn Conservatory Chorale perform Boston to Buenos Aires: Music of the Americas from Colonial to Tango. Guest soloists include singer and actor Chris Vasquez, cellist Eleanor Norton, and piccolo player Christina Perea. The program covers centuries of music in the Americas and is conducted by Nelly Vuksic with Cesar Vuksic at the piano.

The landscape of music creation in the Americas is extraordinarily rich and varied, encompassing an extensive range of evolution and transformation. The New World absorbed influences from many different countries and cultures, producing an original and unique musical expression.

Boston to Buenos Aires begins with early music of the Americas, featuring compositions by the well-known 18th century New England composer W. Billings as well as works by early South American composers. Billings’ music, while based in Biblical text, is sensuous and dramatic and uses unorthodox harmonies. The early composers of Latin America, in spite of their religious narrative, express a large range of feelings in their music, which often is based on dance rhythms of great vitality.

The program also features 20th century and contemporary compositions of different styles and approaches, ranging from strong, dramatic Spanish flamenco flavor by E. Grau (Argentina) to the delicate and poetic elegance of G. Glass (USA, born in Panama) and C. Guastavino (Argentina). Other composers presented include: Conservatory faculty member Michael Rose (USA), E. Aguiar (Brazil), M. Lifchitz (Mexico), H. Villalobos (Brazil), and A. Piazzolla (Argentina).

Cooking demos, food tastings, moonshine sipping and a chilled organic soup pureed making - with the aid of a human-powered bike-blender are all part of the line-up for second weekend of FABfest -a month-long three-block street festival EVERY SUNDAY IN JUNE on Fulton Street between Lafayette Avenue and South Oxford Street, in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.

Now in its 33rd year, DanceAfrica, guided by the vision of artistic director Chuck Davis, unites dance companies from near and far to celebrate the cultures of Africa and its Diaspora. This year, the Pamodzi Dance Troupe from Zambia offers a medley of traditional music and dance rich with Zambian heritage. They will be joined by the American companies Dallas Black Dance Theatre, Illstyle & Peace Productions from Philadelphia, and Brooklyn’s very own BAM/Restoration DanceAfrica Ensemble for a program that promises to inspire.

A Memorial Day weekend tradition, DanceAfrica is packed with dance, music, art, and film events-plus the-one-and-only DanceAfrica outdoor bazaar.

Celebrate the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Africa and its Diaspora at the DanceAfrica 2010 Bazaar. Close to 300 vendors from around the world converge on the streets surrounding BAM, transforming the neighborhood into a global marketplace offering African, Caribbean, and African-American food, crafts, and fashion.

The Bazaar will also feature entertainment for families with face painting and crafts at the Children’s Village, and guest artists will be roaming through the marketplace throughout the day.

Alternate Side Parking Rules Suspended Memorial Day
Alternate side parking (street cleaning) regulations are suspended on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31.
Because Memorial Day is a major legal holiday, parking meter regulations are also suspended. On major legal holidays, stopping, standing, and parking are permitted, except in areas where stopping, standing, and parking rules are in effect 7 days a week (for example, “No Standing Anytime”).
The 2010 alternate side parking (street cleaning) rules suspension calendar is available on the DOT Web site, along with other alternate side parking information, at http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/motorist/scrintro.shtml. The calendar is available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Haitian Creole, Italian, Korean, and Russian.

Community Cleanup and Summer Jobs

- New York City Community Cleanup

Mr. Smith stated that his organization is a small group funded by the City that is focused on cleaning up streets. There is an 11-person crew based on Schermerhorn Street that travels the borough. From vacant lots to graffiti cleanup, Mr. Smith and his team reach out to property owners and clean up sites at no cost.

Mr. Smith requested the support of community residents by taking photos of sites and emailing them to his office.

Their motto is ‘you point it out and we’ll clean it up.” They focus on publicly owned sites. Kai Smith’s phone number is 917-224-2072. The website is www.cleanupnyc.org.
