Brooklyn Bridge Rehabilitation

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

IMPORTANT NOTICE
Division of Bridges - Rehabilitation of the Brooklyn Bridge

The New York City Department of Transportation is performing rehabilitation work on the Brooklyn Bridge ramps and approaches, which are in urgent need of repair. As part of the project, the steel components of the entire span will also be repainted to prevent corrosion. This work started in the spring and will continue until 2014.

To facilitate this work, DOT announces that the Brooklyn Bridge will be closed to Manhattan-bound traffic overnight, beginning on Monday, Aug. 23rd and will continue until the project is completed in 2014. All Manhattan-bound traffic will be detoured to the Manhattan Bridge or other crossings. All Brooklyn-bound traffic will be maintained, and there will be no closure of the pedestrian/cycling promenade. All work will occur during off-peak hours, and the bridge will be reopened for traffic in both directions each morning.

Closure Times

Sundays to Fridays: closures will begin at 11 PM and the lanes will reopen at 6 AM.

Saturdays: closure will begin at 12:01 AM and the lanes will reopen at 7 AM.

Sundays: closure will begin at 12:01 AM and lanes will reopen at 9 AM.

A downloadable brochure showing detour routes and closure dates and times is available at: http://nyc.gov/html/dot/downloads/pdf/brooklyn_bridge_brochure.pdf, or by contacting Sabrina Lau at the number below, to receive a copy in the mail. During closure times, a construction embargo will be in place on the Williamsburg and Manhattan Bridges, as well as on those local streets in Brooklyn and Manhattan that are utilized for detoured traffic.

DAM FUNK + MASTER BLAZTER
Crowned “ambassador of Boogie Funk,” Stones Throw DJ and recording artist Dam-Funk insists that though “Boogie is fun… I don’t want to be lumped into a hole… I’m not going to let anybody peg me.” (L.A. Times, 11/01/09). Indeed, Dam-Funk’s heavily synthesized music may be too modern to be considered strictly Boogie, but it’s definitely funk through and through. Originally a DJ, LA based Dam-Funk has recently been creating modern-funk atmosphere for worldwide audiences with his own compositions. This Summer’s notable tour stops include Warsaw, London, Helsinki, Singapore, and Fort Greene Park! Mirrors Music Video, Click Here
DJ SPINNA
Since the early 90′s, the “Golden Age” of the underground Hip-Hop movement, Brooklynite DJ Spinna has been a major presence in the world of underground music. Both artist and producer, DJ Spinna works primarily with hip hop, funk, soul, and dance music, and has mixed tracks for Stevie Wonder, Mary J. Blige, and De La Soul. Spinna’s original beats have been featured in the work of the most prominent emcees in the music business, including Brooklyn’s own Mos Def and Talib Kweli.

Street Closures and Service Interruptions

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

NYC DOT is performing a lot of needed work in our area in the month of July. Please note of the following:

FULTON STREET MALL
+ The bulk of the demolition work will be at night with the remaining roadwork to take place during the day.

+ Side streets will remain open and construction will be phased such that north and south movement through Fulton Street will be maintained at all times.

+ As always, deliveries will not be permitted on Fulton Street. Merchants are encouraged to use side street loading/unloading zones, which will remain available during roadbed construction.

+ Emergency vehicles will continue to have access along Fulton Street.

+ Private garbage pick up and delivery arrangements will need to be coordinated with Chris Woods of HDR-Daniel Frankfurt.

BUS ROUTE CHANGES

As a result of the construction work, bus stops will be eliminated and relocated as follows:

Eliminated as of July 12:

B25 stop on Fulton Street between Gallatin and Hoyt, B26 and B54 panels to remain

B25 stop on Fulton Street between Elm and Bond, B26 and B54 panels to remain

B25 stop on Fulton between Hanover and Flatbush, B26 and B54 panels to remain

B25 stop on Fulton between Rockwell and Ashland, B26 panel to remain

B25 stop on Fulton between St. Felix and Lafayette, B26 panel to remain

New as of July 12:

B25, B38 and B52 stop on Livingston between Smith and Hoyt, install B25, B38 and B52 panels to existing stop

B25, B38 and B52 stop on Livingston between Hoyt and Bond, install B25, B38 and B52 panels to existing stop

B25, B38 and B52 stop on Livingston between Nevins and Flatbush

B25, B38 and B52 stop on Lafayette between St. Felix and Ft. Greene Place

B61 and B65 stop on Smith between Schermerhorn and Livingston, install lollipop pole, B61 and B65 panels

New York City Transit did not provide bus route changes, only bus stop relocations. According to the Fulton Mall Improvement Association, “NYC Transit will be responsible for communicating these route changes to the riding public.” Hopefully the preceding will help with the last minute outreach.

BROOKLYN BRIDGE

The New York City Department of Transportation is performing rehabilitation work on the Brooklyn Bridge ramps and approaches, which are in urgent need of repair. The entire span will also be repainted to prevent steel corrosion. This work will commence in the spring of 2010 and continue until 2014.

To facilitate this work, two of three lanes will be closed on the westbound main bridge. This work is currently scheduled to begin on July 12th, and will take about four weeks. After completion, two of three lanes will be closed on the eastbound main bridge and eastbound closures are scheduled for an additional four weeks. All work will occur during off-peak hours:
Westbound
Eastbound
These closures will allow the vertical protective shields to be installed along the westbound main bridge, which is the first step toward setting up containment units for paint work. The start date of these closures is an estimate, and actual closures could be put into effect after that date. Specific notification will be made via email, Facebook (NYCDOT), Twitter (#NYCDOTbkbridge), and Notify NYC, at least 72 hours in advance.

For more information on the project, please visit the website at: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/bridges/brooklyn_bridge.shtm

FLUSHING AVENUE

Construction will start Saturday, July 17th on the addition of bike lanes to Flushing Avenue. This will reduce the travel lanes to one lane in each direction, and result in the removal of on-street parking on the NORTH side of Flushing (from Navy to Williamsburg Streets).

+ Mondays to Fridays: closures will begin at 2:00AM and the lanes will reopen at 6:00 AM.

+ Saturdays: closure will begin at 3:00 AM and the lanes will reopen at 7:00 AM.

+Sundays: closure will begin at 3:00 AM and lanes will reopen at 8:00 AM.

+ Sundays to Fridays: closures will begin at 11:00PM and the lanes will reopen at 6:00 AM.

+ Saturdays and Sundays: closure will begin at 2:00 AM and lanes will reopen at 6:00 AM.

As part of the renovation of the Fulton Mall. Trocom, the project contractor, advised Community Board 2 that effective 6:00 a.m. Monday, July 12, Fulton Street between Adams Street/Boerum Place and Jay Street will be closed. HDR-Daniel Frankfurt, the project engineer, states the closure will be for approximately four weeks. The Fulton Mall Improvement Association provided the following details in its July 7 newsletter:

NYC Summer Fun Guide for Kids

Friday, July 9th, 2010
The printed edition of the “Youth Summer Fun Guide” often arrives mid-summer, too late for physical distribution. Thanks to Rob Perris of Community Board 2 for the heads up.

The New York City Youth Guide to Summer Fun is a broad citywide calendar of family-oriented events and resources. The vast compilation includes activities that range from the artistic to the athletic, from the literary to the musical, and can be enjoyed at indoor and outdoor locations - most for free or at low cost. The guide also includes a list of all public swimming pools and barbeque sites at public parks, as well as a comprehensive section on “Museum Deals” within the City.

RENOVATION: THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

All of us who live in historic brownstone neighborhoods of Brooklyn know that an inescapable part of maintaining our environment involves renovating our apartments, buildings and infrastructure. Everything man-made, no matter how permanent it seems, will eventually weather, rot, fall apart and return to the elements if not attended to. The buildings we live in brownstone Brooklyn are mostly old, which is a good thing. We enjoy the historic flavor of our neighborhoods and feel connected with generations past and future by being immersed in a historically grounded environment which is constantly changing. Constant change always accompanies the historic environment due to the fact that built structures must be maintained and renovated over time and, even more significantly, our way of life and the way we use our buildings also change over time.

One of the great challenges in conceptualizing and designing a renovation project is figuring out how to adapt a building built in a certain time, for a certain type of clientele in a certain society, to our current way of life. There are many ways of realizing this adaptation, some of which leave the building very much in its historical form, others which drastically change the appearance and feel of the spaces. Regardless of the approach, executing it well is not easy and, as many of us who have lived in awkwardly reconfigured brownstone apartments can attest to, somewhat rare.

Another great challenge is the reality of the renovation process. Those of us who have been through it know how daunting it can be. It involves the coordination of many different people, from architects, designers, engineers and expeditors to contractors, plumbers, carpenters, electricians, millworkers and the list goes on. It involves countless iterations of design, planning, municipal filings, as well as a healthy dose of the dirty and noisy stuff - demolition, structural work, framing, plumbing and electrical work, installation of finishes, painting and plastering and so on.

Those of us who do this for a living mostly find this to be an exciting and rewarding process. On June 29 join Perfect Renovation and others to discuss both the design and construction aspects of renovation for an educational and entertaining event. Richard Goodstein, RA, Design Director and Larry Montgomery, Construction Manager will discuss theory, planning and implementation of renovation projects with an emphasis on design-build project delivery. The team will also be on hand to answer any questions you may have regarding the renovation process. We look forward to seeing you.
